What is UPF:
UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) is a rating for fabrics that measures how much UV radiation they block, similar to SPF for sunscreen, with higher numbers offering more protection, making it essential for sun-protective clothing, hats, and swimwear to prevent sunburn, premature ageing, and skin cancer by shielding skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays.
How UPF Works:
- UPF 30: Good protection (blocks 96.7% of UV rays).
- UPF 50+: Excellent protection (blocks 98% or more of UV rays) recommended by dermatologists.
- UPF 90+: Superb protection (blocks 98.8% or more of UV rays) highly recommended for long days outdoors.
Fabric Factors:
Protection comes from tighter weaves, special UV-blocking fibres, and chemical treatments, with denser fabrics and materials like polyester and nylon generally offering better protection than cotton.
Lightweight fabrics feel cool on the skin, wick moisture efficiently, and dry fast, keeping you comfortable in warm and hot conditions.
